In 2017 it\u00b4s the 100th anniversary of the apparitions and the Pope\u00b4s presence is expected.<\/p>\n<p>Now drive to <strong>Ferreira do Z\u00eazere<\/strong>, a geographic transition territory between <strong>Ribatejo<\/strong> and <strong>Beiras<\/strong>, between the flatlands and the pine forests of the interior. The <strong>county stands out for its natural beauty and landscape provided by the Z\u00eazere River (Castelo de Bode Lake) and the w<\/strong>ide forest that provides outstanding touristic potentialities. It has a diversified heritage in terms of archaeology, history, religion, architecture and culture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tr\u00edzio<\/strong> will be your final stop. It is located next to Z\u00eazere\u2019s Nautical Centre, with river beach, marina, camping, restaurant and a bar. This region has hundreds of them.<\/p>\n<p>First stop, <strong>Pedrog\u00e3o Grande<\/strong> and <strong>G\u00f3is<\/strong>, a charming small mountain town between the A\u00e7or mountain and the Serra de Lous\u00e3 mountain, with beautiful views and a lovely small church. Many like to spend their Sunday afternoons by the side of the river Ceira, it\u00b4s a pleasant place to picnic, swim and canoe.<\/p>\n<p>Continue your journey North towards <strong>Arganil<\/strong>, one of the most beautiful Portuguese counties, with river beaches, waterfalls, typical gastronomy, historical heritage and hiking routes. After, you have the beautiful village of <strong>Coja<\/strong>, a 13th century village with a cultural and historical heritage, an amazing river beach; place of extreme beauty and calmness.<\/p>\n<p>To overnight, you\u00b4ll stay in <strong>Barril de Alva<\/strong>, just by the river <strong>Alva<\/strong>. The village is quiet and is well equipped in terms of Camper vanning, with a beach, eating park, green areas and welcoming population.<\/p>\n<p>While driving North, around the <strong>Serra do A\u00e7or<\/strong> hills, we are not only charmed by the majesty and purity of the landscape, but we are also overcome with curiosity and impatience. <strong>Pi\u00f3d\u00e3o<\/strong> stubbornly remains hidden so that it can then astound us with its architecture, which is such a good example of Man\u2019s ability to adapt harmoniously to the most inhospitable but sublime places. Like a crib, the <strong>Shale Houses<\/strong> stand along the terraces of the slopes, which show blue and schist between narrow winding streets.<\/p>\n<p>Now head to <strong>Serra da Estrela<\/strong>, the highest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mountain_range\">mountain range<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Continental_Portugal\">Continental Portugal<\/a> with its highest point at 1.993 meters (6.539 feet) above sea level. This point is not a distinctive mountain summit, but rather the highest point in a plateau, being known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Torre_(Serra_da_Estrela)\">Torre<\/a>\u00a0(\u00ab\u00a0Tower\u00a0\u00bb in English). There is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ski_resort\">ski resort<\/a>\u00a0at the summit, named\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vodafone_Ski_Resort\">Vodafone Ski Resort<\/a>. The mountain range, situated between the municipalities of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seia\">Seia<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manteigas\"><strong>Manteigas<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gouveia_Municipality,_Portugal\"><strong>Gouveia<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guarda_Municipality,_Portugal\">Guarda<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Covilh%C3%A3\"><strong>Covilh\u00e3<\/strong><\/a>, is about 100 kms (60 miles) long and is 30\u00a0kms (19\u00a0miles) across at its widest point. It is formed from a huge\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Granite\">granite<\/a>\u00a0ridge that once formed the southern frontier of the country. Due to its bizarrely shaped crags and gorges, mountain streams and lakes, beautiful forests and magnificent views, the area ranks among Portugal\u2019s outstanding scenic attractions.<\/p>\n<p>The next stop is at the foot of the beautiful <strong>Vale do Z\u00eazere<\/strong>. With high peaks and forest-draped slopes dominating the horizon in all directions, <strong>Manteigas<\/strong> feels more like a true mountain town than any of the other major Serra da Estrela gateways. There has been a settlement here since at least Moorish times, probably because of the nearby\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lonelyplanet.com\/portugal\/manteigas\/activities\/other\/caldas-de-manteigas\"><strong>Caldas of Manteigas<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0hot springs. <strong>Manteigas<\/strong> makes an excellent base for hikers looking to explore the region. Walk through the glacial valley above town and you\u2019ll still encounter terraced meadows, stone shepherds\u2019 huts and tinkling goat-bells, while in <strong>Manteigas<\/strong> itself, cobblestone streets and older homes still hold their own against the high-rise development that has taken root on the Serra\u2019s fringes.<\/p>\n<p>Next stop and overnight place is <strong>Aldeia Vi\u00e7osa<\/strong>. It has very good facilities, such has playground, sport facilities, bar, pool and waterslide and plenty of green spaces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><em><span class=\"s1\">2<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>nd<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> overnight &#8211; Aldeia Vi\u00e7osa<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>GPS: <\/b>40.57992, -7.30794<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=\u00a0\u00bb3rd Day\u00a0\u00bb custom_font_container=\u00a0\u00bbtag:h2|font_size:17px|text_align:left|line_height:16px\u00a0\u00bb custom_google_fonts=\u00a0\u00bbfont_family:Open%20Sans%3A300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C600%2C600italic%2C700%2C700italic%2C800%2C800italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal\u00a0\u00bb use_custom_heading=\u00a0\u00bbtrue\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Heading South will undergo <b>Vila Nova de Milfontes<\/b>, located in the estuary of the Mira river, which gives shelter to several species of birds and marine life, and <b>Zambujeira do Mar<\/b>, where in August is held the Southwest Festival, the largest music festival during the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Next stop <b>Castro Verde<\/b>, a small agricultural town that owes its name to an old prehistoric Castro. You should visit Castro Verde on the 3rd Sunday of October to visit the agricultural and craft fair that dates back to the 17th century. It is very well-known and every year attracts thousands of visitors. Also, very interesting to see is the Basilica, covered from top to bottom with magnificent hand painted tiles. The panels of the upper section of the basilica, depict scenes of the battle of <b>Ourique<\/b>, a town 14 kms away, where Afonso D. Henriques, routed the Moors and was proclaimed King of Portugal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Then visit <b>M\u00e9rtola<\/b> village, an important river port from the 11th century, rising it\u00b4s castle in a dominant position on one of the Guadiana river stretch. Its importance was such, that during a short period in the 11th century was the capital of a small independent Islamic Emirate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After, you\u00b4ll spend the night at the river beach of <b>Tapada Grande &#8211; Mina de S\u00e3o Domingos<\/b>. The beach is simply wonderful. It is equipped with a cafe\/restaurant with terrace and picnic tables right near the beach, so you don\u00b4t have to walk far. It was constructed for the purpose of irrigation of the entire region and production of electricity, in addition to other complementary activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Today, the <b>Alqueva<\/b> <b>Lake<\/b> is used for boating, water sports and it is an ideal area for <b>Stargazing<\/b>, because of its total absence of light pollution. In its margins, we can visit places like <b>Luz, Mour\u00e3o, Monsaraz<\/b>, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Monsaraz,<\/b> known locally as Ninho das \u00c1guias (Eagles\u2019 Nest) \u2013 is perched high above the border plains, a tiny village nestled into fortified walls close to the Spanish border. The views from the walls are magnificent: to the north and west, you survey a typically flat Alentejo plain of vineyards and olive groves, while to the south and east a watery expanse glitters far below the village, part of Europe\u2019s largest artificial reservoir behind the dam at <b>Alqueva<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The village does its best to attract visitors with a series of little galleries, craft shops and restaurants, but it\u2019s really the castle, the higgledy-piggledy streets and stunning views that keep people coming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Four thousand years ago, the region around <b>Monsaraz<\/b> was an important centre of megalithic culture, and various dolmens (covered temples or tombs), menhirs (standing stones) and stone circles survive today. An hour and a half\u2019s driving circuit takes in most of these, and if you throw in lunch and a vineyard visit at nearby <b>Reguengos<\/b> that\u2019s a good day out. Don\u2019t miss a small village called <b>S\u00e3o Pedro do Corval<\/b>, masters of traditional hand painted pottery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The final site for this day is the city of <b>\u00c9vora<\/b>. Its historical, well preserved center, is one of Portugal richest in terms of monuments, which gave the name of the City Museum, and since 1986, declared World Heritage by <b>UNESCO<\/b>. The city is surrounded by a wall, protecting its cultural heritage. It was once an important border settlement where Dom Dinis, an early monarch who set about fortifying Portugal\u2019s frontiers, chose to locate his hilltop palace. Meanwhile, down in the lower town, the vast main square known as the <b>Rossio<\/b> \u2013 properly, the Rossio Marqu\u00eas de Pombal \u2013 has long been the site of one of Portugal\u2019s finest markets, held every Saturday. It starts and finishes early, so it pays to stay over in town on Friday night if you can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The attractive hilltop town of <b>Elvas<\/b>, was once one of Portugal\u2019s mightiest frontier posts, strategically positioned just 15km from <b>Spanish<\/b> <b>Badajoz<\/b>, to the east across the <b>Guadiana River<\/b>. Its star-shaped walls and outlying forts are among the best-preserved military fortifications in Europe, a factor that subsequently helped gain the town <b>UNESCO World Heritage<\/b> status. Its military significance long past, and down to a population of around 25,000, it looks largely to tourism these days \u2013 Spanish day-trippers pop over to climb the steep cobbled streets and sit in the restored central square, while the vibrant Monday market (held on alternate weeks) is a big attraction, held just outside town behind the aqueduct. Otherwise, the town\u2019s main annual bash is its week-long Festa de S\u00e3o Mateus, starting on September 20 and including the largest procession in southern Portugal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By the time, you\u2019ve negotiated the winding road up to <b>Marv\u00e3o<\/b> you\u2019re ready for sensational panoramas, and the remote border outpost doesn\u2019t disappoint. From the dramatically sited rocky outcrop high above the undulating mountain, there are unbeatable views, while within a complete circuit of seventeenth-century walls lies a higgledy-piggledy town of fewer than a thousand residents, inhabiting neat houses with granite windows and pitched red roofs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><em><span class=\"s1\">5<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> overnight &#8211; PE Marv\u00e3o<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>GPS: 39.3941, -7.37347<\/b><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=\u00a0\u00bb6th Day\u00a0\u00bb custom_font_container=\u00a0\u00bbtag:h2|font_size:17px|text_align:left|line_height:16px\u00a0\u00bb custom_google_fonts=\u00a0\u00bbfont_family:Open%20Sans%3A300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C600%2C600italic%2C700%2C700italic%2C800%2C800italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal\u00a0\u00bb use_custom_heading=\u00a0\u00bbtrue\u00a0\u00bb]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">First stop of the day, the small town of <b>Castelo de Vide<\/b>, throws up one of the nicest surprises in the Alentejo. A castle rises up above a fairy-tale townscape of bright white houses, while steep cobbled streets and placid squares are lined with well-watered pots of geraniums, tumbling house plants and two-meter-high sunflowers. Mineral springs pepper the local hills and the town is full of public fountains in gleaming squares and shaded gardens. It\u2019s one of those places that begs an aimless, meandering stroll, and it\u2019s very easy to find you\u2019ve spent a couple of days here doing not very much at all quite happily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now head towards <b>Nisa<\/b>. Considered by an American magazine as one of the best in the world, the <b>Cheese of Nisa<\/b> is the most recognized and appreciated cheese of the <b>Alentejo<\/b>. Cured, semi-hard and a color between white and yellow, of handicraft production, it is made with raw milk of ewes of the local <b>Merina Branca<\/b> breed, coagulated with thistle and follows a process of slow draining of the curd and subsequent maturation, done in three distinct phases, during 45 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Situated in the borderline of <b>Ribatejo<\/b> and <b>Alentejo<\/b> regions, <b>Ponte de S\u00f4r<\/b> is an essentially agricultural council.
